Back Home…
Our Young Horse Development Team has been preparing Cyber Flower, Cherry Cola, Truly Special, Las Lajas, and new mare Lorrain, to compete this upcoming week at Saratoga. Beezie will make a brief trip back from Calgary to join the young horses at Saratoga this Wednesday and Thursday! She will then fly back to Calgary on Friday. It’s a busy week for Beezie!
Q & A with Beezie…
“Do you only bed in straw and if you had to bed in shavings, how deeply do you bed your stalls and bank them? Here in Wellington everyone beds in shavings sadly☹️ Thank you so much!! - Kelly C.”
Hi Kelly,
We prefer to bed in straw whenever possible. We find the horses rest better on it, it’s easier and faster for us to clean the stalls, it’s less dusty, and we like that the horses can snack on it between meals. When we are at home, it is also better for our fields than shavings, as we do spread directly on the fields rather than maintaining a manure pile.
The only times we will bed on shavings is if it’s impossible to do straw at a show, or we have a horse with a specific situation, such as an allergy, that requires shavings.
We prefer to bed pretty deep, whether we are using straw or shavings. We do bank shavings, especially in smaller stalls at shows.
Thanks for your question! -Team JMS
Here’s a video we did on cleaning a straw stall. We promise with practice, it’s much faster than the video shows! :)

I made the switch to straw bedding on my farm this Spring. There is indeed a learning curve to how to best bed the stall as well as clean it. But now that I'm converted I'm loving it. I have my manure hauled away, but occasionally I have to spread it. I like that it breaks down easier than shavings and doesn't permanently ruin the grass (the straw with urine in it does bleach the grass though).
Loving the newsletter. Best of luck to all the young horses!
Best wishes for your younguns at Saratoga. ( I love the name Cherry Cola 🙂)
